The Farm 2003
Dedicatad to the late
Jim Pomeroy
You would always see Jim with a smile on his Face
As I am reposting the archives of the Vintage Races from the Pacific Northwest, I run across this race at Chehalis Wa. An AHRMA National just called "The Farm", but there was never a story from those who were there posted about it. I myself was not there either but the significance of this race could not be overlooked.
The journey started long before, but it was 1973 when this saga began for this race in Chehalis. You see in 1973 American racer Jim Pomeroy became known to the world as “The First American”.
Jim Pomeroy is responsible for a number of firsts in motocross during the 1970s. His record of first includes:
* The first American to win an FIM World Championship MX Event (Spain 1973)
* The first rider to win his debut World GP MX race (Spain 1973)
* The first American to lead the World MX Championship (Spain 1973)
* The first rider to win a World MX GP on a Spanish MX bike (Bultaco)
* The first winner of an indoor Supercross race (Houston, 1974)
* The first American to lead the Trans-AMA Championship (1975)
* The first American to win a moto at the U.S. 500cc GP race (Carlsbad 1977)
* The first non-world champion to win the Trophies des-Nations event (1974)
But in 1973, in the Spanish GP a scoring error was made that gave the first place trophy to Maico rider Hans Maisch. It was not until the next day that the error was found, but the trophy was already in Germany and not to be returned. Thirty (30) years later Jim’s Brother Ron, with help from a lot of folks, found the original Trophy maker and had one built. Which brings us full circle to The AHRMA National Race in Chehalis WA.
It was here that Ron presented Jim with the Trophy that he so rightly deserved with his win in Barcelona Spain. In the Photo Album is this presentation along with the normal pictures. Jim Pomeroy was not only a Champion Motocross Racer but a great Ambassador to our Sport.
God Speed Jim
